Mumbai: Citi has appointed Balasubramanian K as the India Subcontinent Sub-Cluster and Banking Head. His appointment is subject to approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). In his new role, Balasubramanian will report to Amol Gupte, Head of Asia South and Banking Head.
A seasoned banker with over two decades of experience, Balasubramanian has worked across multiple markets and served clients from major industries and geographies in India. He has been associated with Citi India since 1996, holding various leadership positions over the years. Before his appointment to this role, he served as the Managing Director and Head of Corporate Banking, South Asia. Prior to that, he was the Group Head- Corporate Bank at HDFC Bank.
Balasubramanian is a Commerce graduate from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and holds professional qualifications as a Chartered Accountant (CA) and Cost Accountant (ICWA). His deep understanding of the Indian financial landscape and extensive expertise in banking make him a strategic choice for the role.
He succeeds Ashu Khullar in this role, who has been leading Citi India since 2019. Under Khullar’s leadership, Citi witnessed significant growth and established itself as a leading investment bank in India’s equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions sector. Khullar will now take on a global role as Co-Head of Global Asset Managers (GAM) alongside Anthony Diamandakis and will be part of the Investment Banking Global Operating Committee.
With this transition, Citi continues its focus on strengthening its leadership in India’s banking sector while driving growth and innovation under Balasubramanian’s leadership.
